Why Refined Food is Best Avoided

Many people think that just because they’ve hired a personal trainer means that their weightloss exercise will come easy. Unfortunately, when we’re talking about weight loss, we’re not just talking about physical exertion and exercise; we’re also talking about a balanced diet.

There is no one type of “balanced diet” which suits everyone. The elderly might need different vitamins and minerals from that of teenagers. Women have different nutritional needs compared to men, and women who are pregnant need a different proportion of proteins and other minerals from women who are lactating. Aside from biological differences, there are also taste and digestive differences.

Most people focus on calories, carbohydrates and fats but not because you eat less of these mean that you have a better weight loss program. Instead of calorie-, carb- or fat-counting it is best to focus on the nutritional quality of the food you are eating. Are you eating whole grains? How about less-processed foods? Choose unrefined virgin oils rather than the refined ones. Choose foods which require cooking instead of the microwave dinners you so love.

In a recent study published at AnneCollins, it was found that more than half of the calories that one gets from Western food come from white fats, white flour and alcohol products, white sugar. All the vitamins and minerals from these kinds of food have been removed during processing.

With more and more people eating refined foods, it is no wonder why the number of people who are having weight issues is also increasing. Because of its lack of fiber, refined foods causes the body to absorb more calories because intestinal activity slows down. If the food we eat is not metabolized properly, it is highly likely to be stored as fat, unless of course there are vitamins and minerals provided.

Aside from these, refined foods cause us to overeat because it doesn’t provide the nutrition that our body needs so that biological hunger ceases. With food which are high in fiber and contains all the essential nutrients, we feel fuller for a longer time! The best weight loss is a healthy weight loss – remove empty foods from your diet!

Refined Flour Products Questions

Is there a term for people who don’t eat “white foods” like white flour, sugar, potatoes, etc?

I usually eat whole grains and use sugar substitutes instead of white flour products and sugar (mostly for health reasons but I also think they taste better than refined, processed stuff), but have a piece of pie or cake or a potato a few times a week. I’ve decided that I want to go the rest of the month without any of the “white” foods. What’s an easy way to tell people this when they offer it to me, though? Is there a term for this kind of diet like there is for vegetarianism or veganism?

Smart dieters in some cases might be a good term…
