Water Mills

They are said to be 100-150 or even 200-250 years old. The fact that Cyprus was given to the British led many locals to move to Anatolia and many Pashas families to leave Lapta. This is the reason why the Turkish population in Lapta is very low. The battle between the Ottoman Empire and Great Britain in the I. World War led to the expropriation of Lapta. Lapta and all its grounds and waters now belonged to the British. The land was divided into sections of 9, 10 or 11 donums and given to indigent families in Lapta, Alsancak and Kar?iyaka. As most Turkish families had moved away earlier, the Greeks now acquired the ownership of the land and the water mills of Lapta. In 1950, all 8 water mills became Greek freehold.

How the mills operated: the water from the main spring was collected by means of water channels and furrows and filled the tower-shaped, 50 to 60 meter-deep well. The water was allowed to escape the well through a small opening at the bottom and thus turned s wheel. The wheel had a grooved rim at the top and hence moved the grindstones by means of belts. These stones were used to make flour out of wheat, grind barley, lentils and chickpeas, but also to separate cotton from its seeds. The 8 mills of the region satisfied the demand of the region satisfied the demand of the entire area. There were also people bringing their wheat from Nicosia and picking up the flour a few days later. Furthermore, the population of Kyrenia, Karao?lano?lu, Lapta, Alsancak, Kar??yaka, Geçitköy, Kayalar, Sadrazamköy and other villages on the other side of the mountain, such as Da?yolu (Fota) and A??rda?, came to grind their wheat. Unfortunately, all these mills are in the state of ruins today while there have been several requests to our government to renovate these antique mills, no measures have been taken. Although one could describe them as historical monuments.
Northern Cyprus Hotels The newest mill is said to be 150 years old and the oldest one 1000 years old- and this is not just a saying, but I have been told so by a university scientist. One of the mills has the machinery to separate cotton from its seeds – it is a French mill from 1850, made in Paris. There are 8 mills in Lapta, 3 in Alsancak and 1 in Kyrenia.

Water Mill Flour Questions

Whose idea was it to make a water wheel powered flour mill?

It happened during the industrial revolution, right?
And what about the wind powered flour mill?
I googled both, but didn’t find anything useful.
Thanks to all answerers.
I mean the ones from the Industrial Revolution specifically.

The idea of harnessing water for power is thought to date back to Mesopotamia, although there’s no clear evidence to suggest it was used specifically to grind wheat.

The earliest solid evidence for a watermill dates back to ancient Greece, the Byzantium period between 600-300BC.

Windmills are thought to have originated in Persia (present day Iran), much later – around 900AD.

The Wikipedia articles below are quite well referenced – I’d check out some of the sources cited, as I’ve seen some of them elsewhere.
